Our one-day symposium brought together academics, researchers, policy makers and service providers to explore how responses to ‘modern slavery’ can best secure the human rights and maintain the dignity of people experiencing severe exploitation. Transforming mobility and immobility: Brexit and beyond, IMISCOE Spring Conference, 29 March 2019 Gwyneth Lonergan and Hannah Lewis presented a paper ‘Faith based anti-trafficking, the ‘good’ victim, and the strengthening of border regimes’.

Unhidden in Plain Sight, 20-30 September 2019.
Unhidden in Plain Sight is a thought-provoking display of photographs reflect complex journeys into and out of modern slavery. The exhibition addresses the problem of how anti-trafficking images often stereotype and re-victimise the people they are trying to support.
The exhibit is a collaboration between photographer Jeremy Abrahams, academics Hannah Lewis and Gwyneth Lonergan (University of Sheffield), and anti-trafficking organisations Ashiana, City Hearts and Snowdrop. It was exhibited from 20-30 September 2019 in the Winter Gardens, Sheffield as part of the Festival of the Mind.

This roundtable brought together leading scholars of modern slavery and experts from Anti-Slavery International and the International Organisation for Migration, to reflect on current efforts to address modern slavery.
Speakers shared cutting edge research and practitioner perspectives on the state of global and national government efforts to combat modern slavery, including: Are current government and civil society initiatives to measure, study, and combat modern slavery working? Are the right actors and experts involved? Is it dangerous to enact solutions when the evidence base on modern slavery is still so thin?
This interdisciplinary conversation will benchmark the state of anti-slavery movements and governance, and chart out pathways forward.
This event was jointly organised by the Department of Sociological Studies, the Migration Research Group, and the Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute (SPERI).
